چکیده
During the course of Hamburg/CfA Bright Quasar Survey we discovered a bright (B = 15.9), high redshift (z em = 2.51) quasar HS 1603+3820. The quasar has a rich complex of Civ absorbers, containing at least five systems, all within 3000 km s −1 from one another. Despite large ejection velocity (v ej > 5000 km s −1 for all components) the complex is likely to be associated with the quasar. There are at least three more associated heavy element absorbers, two of which have z abs > z em. Together, they make one of the richest known complexes of associated heavy element absorbers, and the richest in objects with B < 16. The combination of redshift, brightness, richness of the metal absorption spectrum and richness of the associated absorption is unmatched among known quasars.

The metal line systems in HS 1700 + 6416 : Evidence forinhomogeneities ?
We present a high S/N ratio optical spectrum of the bright quasar HS 1700+6416. These data usefully complement the UV HST data from Vogel & Reimers (1995). We analyse the metal line systems using photo-ionization models allowing for inhomogeneities in the gas. The models are able to reproduce within a factor of two the large N(He i)/N (H i) ratio together with the mean column densities of the h...
متن کاملLy α emission at z ∼ z em around the quasar J 2233 − 606 in the Hubble Deep Field South ?
The STIS Hubble Deep Field South around the quasar J2233−606 was observed in the course of the VLT-UT1 Science Verification programme with the Test Camera in two broad-band filters, B and R, and in a narrow-band filter roughly centered at the quasar emission redshift, zem = 2.238. The most striking result is the discovery of a giant Lyα nebulosity around this radio-weak quasar, with an overall ...
متن کاملHS 1543 + 5921 – a bright z = 0 . 807 QSO in the center of the ‘ Seyfert ’ galaxy SBS 1543 + 593 ?
We show that the 'Seyfert' galaxy SBS 1543+593 is a by-chance projection of the center of a nearby galaxy (z = 0.009) onto the bright QSO HS 1543+5921 (z = 0.807). The quasar has been discovered independently by the Hamburg Quasar Survey, an automated survey for bright QSOs based on digitized objective prism Schmidt plates. Direct imaging and subsequent spectroscopy of a faint (R = 22 m) HII re...
متن کاملQuasars Probing Quasars Iii: New Clues to Feedback, Quenching, and the Physics of Massive Galaxy Formation
Galaxies hosting z ∼ 2 quasars are the high-z progenitors of today’s massive ‘red-and-dead’ galaxies. With close pairs of quasars at different redshifts, a background quasar can be used to study a foreground quasar’s halo gas in absorption, providing a wealth of information about feedback, quenching, and the physics of massive galaxy formation. We present a Keck/HIRES spectrum of the bright bac...
متن کاملHE 0141 – 3932 : a bright QSO with an unusual emission line spectrum and associated absorption ⋆
HE 0141–3932 (zem = 1.80) is a bright blue radio-quite quasar with an unusually weak Lyα emission line. Large redshift differences (∆z = 0.05) are observed between high ionization and low ionization emission lines. Absorption systems identified at z abs = 1.78, 1.71, and 1.68 show mild oversolar metallicities (Z ≈ 1 − 2Z⊙) and can be attributed to the associated gas clouds ejected from the circ...
